Draft Genome of the Pearl Oyster Pinctada fucata: A Platform for Understanding Bivalve Biology

The genome of the pearl oyster, Pinctada fucata, has been sequenced. The resultant data of some 1,000 Mb in size were analyzed which were found to contain approximately 23,000 genes, including those for bio-mineralization processes likely to function within the layers of oyster shells.
